The invitation to young Democrats at UC Berkeley was enticing, offering an unusual opportunity to speak with their party's leader, Gov. Gray Davis, only a few days after he won the March primary.
But there was a catch.
"I am sure all of you know students and young professionals who are politically interested," said the letter from Mike Montgomery, a fund-raiser for Davis. "This is a great opportunity to interact with the governor for a mere $100."

"Somebody very high up in the (Davis) administration," she said, told her that "the reason he didn't sign (the bill) is 'because you didn't give him money.'
"I could not believe my ears," the attorney said. "I went crazy."
Well, there you have it not only will Davis shake down college students who really don't have any extra money, but Davis will not sign legislation desired by his constituency unless they give money.
The man it truely "Clinton-ian," I know understand why he wants to run for the Presidency, it will provide him with an even better opportunity to shake down people for money.
This newspaper article is very significant in that it paints the true picture of Davis and his quest for money. This makes me think that the Oracle scandel and other campaign contributions after policy decisions are nothing but bribe money, which is likely what they were.
He is worse than Clinton. Seriously. I don't say that lightly. Clinton is a better politician than Davis, which makes him more effective. Davis makes up for his lack of political acumen with cold hard evil.
He ran the nastiest primary campaign in memory in 1994 against Diane Feinstein and lost. It was infamous for him doing tv commercials comparing her to Leona Helmsley.
I am not soft on criminals, but Davis has made being tough on criminals a cynical attempt to look tough for the voters for his presidential campaign in the future. Most criminals deserve to stay there, however Davis refuses to pardon anybody even if they got railroaded. He would rather these people rot in jail than make him look soft. That is not strength, it is simmering cowardly weakness.
I know many democrats, including my mother, who are not voting for Davis because he is such a sleazebucket. No, they aren't voting for Simon, because they are liberal, but are going to sit on their hands or vote 3rd party, and my mother for example has never done that in her life.
If somebody put a gun to my head and told me the two choices for president were Davis and Clinton and I had to choose one, I would have to get used to 4 more years of Bubba. That is what I think of Gray Davis.
Sadly, I would have to agree with your choice. It is crystal clear that Davis has been, and continues to run a payola style administration.
"Like a turnstile, you put in a coin, and the door opens."
This has become so blatant the even the Sierra Club is openly criticizing 'their guy' in the Governors Office. That fact alone is the best news for us stuck in this wonderful state currently run by self-serving giveaway artists.
Watch for the "huge juggernaut" defense. It worked once for Willie Jeff. But Bubba could get away with it by turning up the charisma dial. Colorless Davis does not have one of those.
That and the fact that the prison guards union (CCPOA) gave Davis over $2.2 million for his 1998 his goob race.
I think Davis is pushing self-confidence a bit far. He will win if people do absolutely nothing but listen to political ads, and if they believe what the ads tell them. But if they read the news, he's toast. I don't know about TV, since I have no idea how well TV news is covering this stuff. (I get all my news from the Internet and watch about an hour of TV a year).
I think a lot of Democrats are going to stay home, just like your Mom. Since the bulk of Republicans are enthusiastic about Simon, I think he has a really good shot, much better than most think right now.
D
Vote Simon
At least you can bitch at him for free!
As a Californian got to agree with you about Davis but if I had to make the choice above...I'd choose the gun...
What the heck is going on?
