Sacramento, California, May 2 (Bloomberg) -- The California agency under investigation for a $95 million contract to buy database software from Oracle Corp. may have destroyed documents related to the deal, Governor Gray Davis's office said.

The California Highway Patrol was sent to the Department of Information Technology in Sacramento, California, to seize shredders and trash, Barry Goode, Davis's director of legal affairs, said in a statement. Davis has asked the state's attorney general to probe the possible shredding, Goode said.

For decades the patrol has prided itself as "above the political frey" and has been utilized by local governments to make politically sensitive arrests. Most Californians feel the patrol is politically neutral.

This is why Gray Davis probably asked them to intervene so he could say: "Look at me. I'm innocent. I asked the CHP to investigate".

I wondered about this, too, because there was a separate, little known agency called the "California State Police" in years past that handled stuff like this. Apparently, in 1994, the State Police was merged into the CHP.

There is a pretty easy explanation for the article: Oracle's stock is pretty low, and most likely the guy who wrote the article is a short seller, or somebody who is a big short seller wants the stock to be knocked down.
Normally it costs around $20,000 to print or broadcast almost anything. If you have a huge amount of short sales, it pays well to have a couple of guys in the media start broadcasting all kinds of stupid, realted to nothing news.
I think this should be considered a criminal offense, but some people say, let the morons sell when they get scared; at least when the stock rebounds it will get a little higher. Remember Haliburton and asbestos? Same scheme.
I do not have a dog in this fight, it doesn't matter to me which way Oracle goes.

California will never throw the bums out. Simon will be branded as a bigot, racist, sexist, fascist and hate-filled homophobe. He'll be demonized as a corporate fat-cat bent on starving children and throwing old people out of their homes. If Davis hits the state with a hugh income tax hike, he'll blame it on the greedy Enron corporate executives, the mean-spirited Republican Congress and George W. Bush. And the people will believe him.

You want to look for a place where the "triumph" of liberalism holds sway, look no further. The California culture is replete with a population of victims who have a gilt-edged sense of entitlement to government largesse from cradle to grave. And the whole thing will continue until all the achievers who are currently being sucked dry by Governor Dufus get fed up and leave -- a phenomenon that's nowhere in sight just yet -- and the whole state implodes.

There is no hope of a Republican victory in November. None.
