Presidential political operative Karl Rove laid it on the line Wednesday in a sometimes heated White House meeting with Bill Simon, California's Republican nominee for governor, and his advisers: Gerald Parsky is still President Bush's principal political agent in the Golden State.
Members of Simon's campaign team have been unhappy with venture capitalist Parsky ever since he was quoted as referring to some of Simon's backers as "extremists." Parsky had urged the candidacy for governor of former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan as a means of helping Bush's 2004 re-election, but Riordan was badly beaten in the GOP primary by political neophyte Simon.
Parsky has strongly endorsed Simon, and Bush will visit California later this month to campaign for the GOP nominee.
Ping away in Ernest!
As for who currently runs California, well, just look at the Legislature. Overwhelmingly Democrat. They can do whatever they want and Gray will sign it and the uninformed idiots in this state will not even know what they are doing. This includes making laws that reverse the results of recent referenda. This state is full of complacent fools. Someone should start shouting this loud and clear on TV. Every damn night, I want to see the information being blasted forth. If people knew what the Democratic Junta was doing, they would be outraged.
And of course, keeping that information from the people (except in 2-paragraph squibs on Page 55, next to the obits) is the Sacred Mission of the media liberals. TV and radio don't mention anything unless it makes conservatives look bad. And the sheeple are too much into "Girls Gone Bad" and the peeping-Tom shows to give a damn.
There is a way to do it, and it isn't that hard.
If Rove had managed to come in from outside, shake up the California Republican establishment, and make it better, fine. More power to him. But clearly he changed things for the worse. Most of California's problem in the first place came from Pete Wilson. You won't solve that by backing more Pete Wilsons.
The country club Republicans have the money and the conservative Republicans have the votes. If they want to beat Gray Davis, they had better learn how to work together. Mainly, that means that the country clubbers have to give something, especially their insistence on pro-abortion, big-tent gibberish. Otherwise, the rank and file will walk, and Davis will easily be re-elected. Davis is vulnerable, but he will not be defeated unless the Republicans run an effective campaign.
What is there about this that Karl Rove doesn't understand? Either he backs Simon, and backs him wholeheartedly, and sends Bush in to raise money for him, or he will lose California. It's as simple as that. There's plenty of reason to think that Parksy is incapable of doing the job.
That's a good thing, considering that California does not have a governor's mansion...
Lose only one of these three: California, Texas, or Florida -- and kiss a second term good-bye! (And, who can argue that it doesn't help to have a Republican Governor in charge come election time!)
If you are correct (and, I'm afraid it appears likely that you may be), then there will be no second term for Bush.
Like Daddy, like son: Snatching defeat from the jaws of unprecedented popularity. It is hard to do, but the Bushes can pull it off!
Perhaps they are simply trying to lead the Stupid "Big Tent" Party by example?
Still, I yearn to be proven wrong by a resurgent, refocused, courageous GWB (but the hour grows late).
Right you are, ambrose! Nancy Reagan couldn't stand the old mansion, which she correctly recognized as a death trap. Since then, Governors have lived in various locations in outlying areas. The squabble over where to build a new mansion has gone on for as long as I can remember.

HERE is an excellent four-part series detailing the Rove/Parsky/Riordan cabal against conservatives in the California Republican Party. Part of what is going on here is a personal vendetta by Gerry Parsky agains Bill Simon Sr. It's all about big money and bigger egoes. It is a perfect indictment of how the Michael Huffington/Brooks Firestone/Log Cabin wing of the Repubelickin Party is stupidly screwing its conservative base.
