WASHINGTON -- As President Bush comes under growing international pressure to rein in Israel's military offensive against Palestinians, he faces countervailing pressure from an overwhelmingly pro-Israeli Congress where some members are pushing for new statements of support for the country.-snip- The bipartisan support for Israel was driven home last week when House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Texas)--viewed by many as the leader of the party's conservative wing in Congress--gave a speech denouncing Arafat as "completely untrustworthy." DeLay called on the Bush administration to throw its weight behind Israel's campaign to "dismantle the Palestinian leadership."

He needs to quit cowering to the EU radicals and the Saudis. Give Sheron 100% backing to eraducate the evil doers in the west bank, his numbers will go out of sight.
He has given all the peace nicks an opertunity to be heard again. Come on GW do the right thing on this!
Anyone who believes that the "moderate" Arab states are somehow useful in this just crusade is a simple fool.
I pray GW learns the wisdom of doing what's right.
Why? Is Sharon not the PM of a sovereign country?
Yes, but we pay the rent.
It seems Bush will do for the Republican party what Clinton did for the Democrats. It is absolutely incredible how he is squandering his moral authority for the sake of Islamic terrorists and the regimes that support them (Saudi Arabia, his father's friends).
You are being sarcastic, right? Have you not watched Colin Powell and GWB repeatedly pull this wretch's chestnuts out of the fire in recent weeks/months?
Or, perhaps you haven't noticed that -- for some strange reason -- the hue with which Mr. Powell's specs are tinted evidently disallows him from viewing Mr. Arafat as a terrorist, or labeling him, as such.
If the Bush Administration had had any moxie and guts, they would have declared on 12Sep01 ALL the West Bank and Chebaa Farms troublemakers TERRORISTS (you know: Al-Aqsa Brigade, Hamas, PLO, Fatah, Islamic Jihad, etc, etc.)
FINALLY, the Bush Admin has belatedly labeled several of these group "terrorists," but, somehow, the ugly toad Arafat is still worthy of being negotiated with . . . .?
Go figure.
I see you have fully bought into State Department histrionics.
Sorry, but the world doesn't revolve around the corrupt, venal, and America-hating House of Saud. It is time for them to go.
What Delay is for is WHAT IS RIGHT, not what is convenient. I know that is hard for people lacking moral sensibilities to understand.
You might have added: It is George Bush who pays for much of Sharon's military budget.
For you to so dismissively pooh-pooh the idea that the weight of America's pressure on Sharon to SPARE Arafat is of little consequence suggests to me that you are on this issue willing to compartmentalize your truth to fit your preferences.
I submit to you, that were it not for US (and, yes, European) pressure on Israel, Arafat would ALREADY be pushing up daisies as you and I debate.
