Reagan defeated the incumbent governor Pat Brown in 1966, true, but it is inportant to note that Brown was running for a THIRD term, unlike Davis, who's facing his first reelection campaign, seeking a SECOND term. In that regard, it is true that no incumbent California governor has lost since 1942 after one term in office.
