There was an article posted recently that detailed that Ashcroft said he didn't have the authority to fire federal employees in light of the recent screwups.
Have you seen it?

Ashcroft said he didn't have the authority to fire federal employees in light of the recent screwups. That's reassuring! Especially in light of our new nose-picking baggage screeners. Another case of lifetime employment (20 years out on full pension)

The Undocumented Immigrant: Heroes or criminals?"Recently I had the opportunity to interview the director of National Security of the United States, Tom Ridge, and he said to me that " technically it is possible to define the undocumented as criminals." After saying that to me - seeking to prevent a counterattack by the Mexican side - added that although these immigrants had broken the law most of them are "good people and good workers."

I read this article someplace - I think NewsMax - where Ashcroft said he could not fire these people. This should be changed as soon as possible. Too many big-time losers are attracted to work in Government for this very reason. Same holds true for bad teachers and professors who are tenured. It's truly dumb and dangerous to not be able to fire incompetent people. And if AG Ascroft can get this reversed, the first person he should get rid of is the head of the INS.
