I hope you're right. Right now this is looking like a certain type of racism that says based on your skin color or ethnicity, you can break the laws others are expected to obey. I don't think this amnesty is meant for Canadians, Ugandans, Englishmen, Chinese or anyone who isn't from Mexico. That's about as racist as it can be.

My understanding is that the bill applies to all ethnicities, but that its urgency arises because of Mexico, from which the greatest number of immigrants come. I've done a good deal of reading (chiefly here at FR), but I'm not yet up to speed on the particulars of this, and really should become so before commenting further. Ditto to many other posters. It's disturbing that so many have proclaimed that under no circumstances will they vote for Bush, Jr.

We're conservatives. Most of us are under-informed about a wide range of issues, even if we're better informed as a rule than non-conservatives. We have, all of us, been wrong before. Let's not jump the gun and make choices that will imperil our best hopes for securing a truly free and prosperous future. On the other hand, if Bush has no greater justification for this than hoping to court hispanic voters for 2004, I'll be deeply disappointed.
