No, Socrates was not forced to do so; his alternative was to leave Athens.
As a citizen of Athens, though, he felt compelled to abide by her laws.

Who among us today holds his principles so strongly?

Your understanding is wrong. Socrates felt obligated to drink the Hemlock because he believed in the importance of civil law. When handed the goblet, he drank of his own will.
