Mexico President Vicente Fox considers the Mexicans living in the United States “the forgotten ones” — economic exiles who deserve more attention, Calzada said.

Oh, really?

[rummages around for exact quote...]

On March 22 and 23, President Vicente Fox of Mexico visited California, home of a large and growing Mexican community, a significant portion of which has not assimilated and identifies more with Mexico than with the United States. Fox did not shout "Viva California Libre!" or anything crude like that, but taken in context, his actions were just as intrusive, if not more. Fox called Mexicans who are in California illegally "heroes", he demanded that the state government award them more benefits than the Mexican government gives the residents of Mexico, and he laid the groundwork for millions of Mexicans to vote in both Mexico and the U.S.A. But unlike Canada in 1967, no American authorities rebuked Fox, nor even questioned what he did. Instead, the president of Mexico was cheered, lionized and escorted about by California's governor. President Bush did not see anything amiss, and even sent his wife to help roll out the welcome mat for a meddling foreign head of state.

Juan Hernandez, head of President Vicente Fox's new Office for Mexicans Abroad, is considering issuing 200,000 survival kits to migrants headed illegally to the US. He said "These migrants are heroes, and we are going to fight for them."

(Fox) pressed the United States government to quickly "build new conditions of fairness" for undocumented Mexican immigrants "whose hard work is a daily contribution to the prosperity of this great nation."

Calling immigrants "national heroes," Mr. Fox has made immigration issues a priority for his nine- month old government. Mr. Bush, to the surprise of many of his Republican supporters, has done the same, entertaining ideas about legalizing migrant workers that go beyond anything previously considered in Washington.

I've had it with the Mexican govt interfering in our governance. Its time to make sure that, at the very least, Mexico reciprocates everything for Americans that they are demanding for illegals here.

I want to vote in Mexican elections....I want to be able to get a Mexican driver's license...I want to be able to attend schools in Mexico at Mexican taxpayer's expense (and get "in state tuition to boot). Oh...and lets not forget welfare for gringos who want to go to Mexico without having to work.

Has the US govt demanded any of these things for Americans in Mexico? Or is this just a one-way street of Mexico demanding everything and the US giving it to them without any pretense of fairness?

Its all about what Consul General Leticia Calzada and her President Vicente Fox want from us. Its a one way street apparently. Ms. Calzada, how about your country extends reciprocal rights, benefits, and privileges to Americans? Its the very least you can do if you insist we be so generous towards your citizens. How about doing the same for ours? I wonder if Mexican taxpayers will feel so charitable with their pesos towards the Yanquis.

Amen. If its sauce for Calzada's goose, its sauce for Americans' gander. :)

You don't get it. They are "needed" because they are here. If the illegals had been kept out all along, then Americans would be doing the work, as they did prior to the massive influx of Americans. Don't give me any of that "Americans won't do the work" crap either. The situation now is entirely artificial, with sub-legal wages the norm due to the availability of illegal workers.

I'm sure the farmers are not thrilled about the government
dictates in order to receive subsidies. BTW it was also the
government who created the problem in the first place by driving out small businesses by regulation so
we have huge packinghouses. But food is still plentiful and cheap

I gave a real example. Those farmers had an economic problem: a direct result of INS action. My opinion is that the labor the illegal Mexican provides is needed here . Instead of having laws that the government won’t enforce. create a legal status to allow the workers needed.

Somehow farmers managed to get their crops in before we had illegal immigration. Guest workers would be a solution, if it were really aimed at solving a problem; currently "guest worker" is a trojan horse being considered to allow illegal aliens to remain here illegally. In other words, rather than calling it another "amnesty" they will call it something else. Don't believe for a minute that the open borders crowd is really worried about how a farmer is going to get his crops picked.

Finally, all of this hand wringing about getting crops picked will be irrelevent if we do not have a country in the first place! There are some things more important than your petty economic concerns.

On O'Reilly recently they had a representative of MECHA, a "chicano nationalist" organization which recently harrassed and stole a bunch of newspapers from college Republicans on the UC Berkeley campus. The MECHA representative openly preached "self-determination" for "his people" in the conquered territories of "Atzlan". He did not come right out and say it, but it was blatantly obvious what MECHA's true agenda is.

What good is it to gain the world and lose your soul - or, what good is it to have your crops harvested cheaply if you no longer have a country in which to enjoy them?

You forgot the part about demanding "bilingual education". We wouldn't want to force Americans to assimilate, now would we? It would be so un-multicultural, after all.

I don't see any farmers refusing government subsidies. Do you?

Food was plentiful and cheap in this country long before we had illegal immigrant labor to harvest it.

So we wink and nod and then expect our children to show respect for our laws and our institutions?

If they really are necessary, then have a program that enables them to be here LEGALLY; not play this stupid game.

An immigration agreement, Calzada said, also would be good for Mexico, “because Mexico needs some time — I don’t know, maybe 15 or 20 years — to improve its economy, its situation.”

How long have they had NAFTA? Wasn't that supposed to improve the Mexican economy and it's been at least 8 years.....now they need to all come to the US instead to improve their economy. What's going on with all that oil they have? They have the 2nd highest oil supplies in this hemisphere ---you'd think that would do a little something for their economy. It is but only for a very few super wealthy elites.

Ha!!! Try getting injured in Mexico. Without an insurance card or credit card, tough luck!!! Fortunately for my Mom, my parents had their credit care with them when she fell.

But I take care of sick infants born in Mexico. After their families take them to a border hospital, they are transported by air to our hospital, and get excellent care. Sometimes the hospital gets reimbursed, but often it doesn't.

What Americans and others would like is to own some of that beautiful coastal properties which could be built up into very nice resorts. Most of Mexico is going to waste because of their backward political system. Americans are not allowed to own this land which is criminal because nothing would be better for the Mexican economy than to let Americans build it up.

I do get it and you are exactly right. ( I assume you meant `Massive influx of illegal ’ )
You can’t just get rid of them without a lot of economic convulsions.
We need to control our borders. And we need to know who’s here.

We could start with the many housing projects around here, most are crappy within two years of construction and should be razed to the ground anyhow. There are large populations of people living in them who have never learned English (and don't intend to), they aren't American in any way except they know where to pick up the welfare checks. I can see possibly giving amnesty to those illegals who have learned English and have their kids assimilated into American culture, who can prove they paid income tax every year of their stay and who have committed no other crime. The rest can all go back.

I don't see to many Mexicans here using food stamps: Usually cash.
But a leagal status based on some requirement ie.learning English no criminal record ect.
But the "not having to learn English" thing happened because of the MC crowd.

Undocumented residents are being cited for minor offenses that “are clogging courthouses in many counties because these Mexicans need to drive,” she said.

Illegal equals criminal, period. I don't care if they are jailed as thieves, or shot as saboteurs. There's a legal process involved in becoming a legal immigrant. It's an insult to citizens and legal immigrants when these scofflaws are given a free pass.

Where are all the law&order RINOs on this issue? Traitors every one.

Well Well Well. It seems that we are on our way to becoming one of those bastard nations whose destiny is in the hands of others. However, we will have diversity, tolerance, equality(for a while),sympathy, and of course ultimately slavery. Enjoy!
