If you were trying to imply that you doubted that the answer to your question was "yes", then you should have phrased it as "I don't think so.". Using "didn't" implies that you have obtained information that confirms your suspicions. The context you used it in is common usage when a question is asked with the assumption that the answer is already known to be in the negative.
