Kidding aside, I've heard one scholar say it's a misinterpetation. The root is HUR and has been translated as houri. But it can also mean white rasins. Seriously.

The Arabic language must be truly amazing. It is the only one which cannot be translated clearly into English. It seems there's a lot of confusion about many religious terms in Arabic, such as whether Islam means peace, or "slaughter all the infidels".
Oddly enough, Hebrew, Greek and Latin don't seem to have this problem.
