We had been sitting in the bar waiting for a table in the smoking section. Another couple was also sitting in the bar waiting for the "next available" table. The bar is small and it was packed, and nearly everyone was smoking.
The other couple was seated before us, and when we were seated they were at the next table. When the waitress brought our drinks she asked us to extinquish our cigarettes as they were bothering the people at the next table. Normally I would have complied, except that we had waited for a table for over an hour and this couple had been sitting next to us in the bar without complaint. I politely declined and we proceeded to order our dinner.
A little while later the waitress came and made the same request and she received the same polite answer explaining that we were sitting in the smoking section.
Shortly thereafter the manager came over with the same request, we again declined. We were then presented with a bill and asked to leave.
Long story short. The cop laughed at the manager and told us to be on our way. I refused to pay the bill.
I have no problem with non-smokers and will bend over backwards to not bother them with my smoking. But anti-smokers are an entirely different breed.
