a strategic alternative to the US - that's a joke isn't it? Do you think the next time Saddham Hussein wants to invade that they can get Iraq to defend themselves or do you think that France will do the job? Either are equally likely. Seriously, they should just pay India as a mercenary to protect them if they don't like us.
