Well, after the Late Unpleasantness (also known as the War for Southern Independence, the War Between the States, the Civil War or the War of the Rebellion -- depending on where one's ancestors lived), it was a generation before the Democrats regained power, and then only because of support in the South that was more anti-Republican than truely in tune with "Democratic Party" principles. Even our casualty on the battlefield today is a reminder that our nation needs to be united behind our troops.
