Region was the best predictor of how an area would vote in 2000 - but, within regions, race was the best predictor of how an individual would vote. Bush won nonminority women as well as nonminority men. Outside of Blue Nation, he won by a landslide among both nonminority women and nonminority men.
But Bush barely won with that overwhelming support of the one racial group that voted for him in 2000: European-Americans. Even if he could somehow bribe every non-Cuban Hispanic in America into voting for him with amnesty, he'd lose in a landslide in 2004 if it alienated even a small percentage of the far-larger number of European-Americans into just abandoning him at the polls.
