Thanks for the links and info. Pershing was a smart man. It's because of him that we avoided making the suicidal mistakes that the British and the French made in World War One. The British had wanted Americans to serve in British units which were making massed infantry assaults against fortified positions. Prior to American intervention, the Germans were winning the war to a much larger degree than most people realize due to their superior artillery and tactics. For a good read on this subject I recommend "The Myth of the Great War" by John Mosier.

While serving as a SGT. in the 1/81st (Pershing Missel) I read several articles and books about Black Jack Pershing. In none of them is this incident mentioned, and I never heard about it until 3 or 4 years ago. I am of the opinion that it never happened.
