Snowboarding: Men's, women's parallel giant slalom
Riders will face off in head-to-head giant slalom races today to determine who walks away with the gold medal. Two riders fly down a slalom course side by side, then switch sides and race again. If one athlete wins both races, he advances. If the athletes split the two races, the best total time in the two races determines who advances. France's Mathieu Bozzetto finished fifth in Nagano in the giant slalom, but countryman Nicholas Huet has been the most consistent of the world's top riders of late. Figure Skating: Ice dancing
Ice dancing compulsories promise to be the most technical evening of figure skating at the Olympic Winter Games. Each team in this event performs the same two compulsory dances. Judges will evaluate competitors' unison, timing, expression, and the accuracy and placement of their dance steps. Each dance counts for 10 percent of a couple's final score.
Snowboarding: Men's, women's parallel giant slalom, semifinals
Tonight's snowboarding action will begin with the semifinals races for both men and women. Among the American men, Chris Klug, who had a liver transplant in 2000, should be a medal contender. On the women's side, Lisa Kosglow is the lone American in the field.
Luge: Doubles finals
As in the men's and women's single luge events, today's doubles competition should feature a heavy German flavor. However, unlike in the previous two events, the host United States has a strong medal contender in the field. The German teams of Andre Florschuetz/Torsten Wustlich and Steffen Skel/Steffen Woeller went 1-2 at the 2001 World Championships and flip-flopped spots in the 2000-2001 World Cup standings. Americans Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin were only eighth at worlds but have Olympic experience. They were third in 1998 at the Nagano Games. Teams will have two runs today, with the fastest combined time determining the winner.

The medals in parallel giant slalom will be awarded tonight. In both the men's and women's brackets, 16 racers will be whittled down to one gold medal winner.

The U.S. men take the ice at the Olympic Winter Games for the first time in their home country since their ?Miracle on Ice? gold medal in Lake Placid, New York. Herb Brooks is once again behind the bench for the red, white and blue, but team colors are about the only thing these American superstars have in common with the little-known 1980 squad. In its opening match, the U.S. team takes on Finland, a squad led by San Jose Sharks superstar Teemu Selanne and inspired by countryman and Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu, who is fighting cancer.

Ice Hockey: Men: Russia vs. Belarus
Russia, which won the silver medal in Nagano, opens up the men's final round with a game against Belarus. Russia will be led by Pavel Bure of the Florida Panthers, who scored nine goals in Nagano-four more than anyone else-and coached by former NHL star defenseman Vyacheslav Fetisov, who is now an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils.
Cross-Country Skiing: Women's pursuit, classical phase
Given the altitude of the Soldier Hollow course, 1,793 meters (5,882.5 feet) at its highest point, today's cross-country women's pursuit will test a competitor's mental and physical toughness. The event consists of a 5-kilometer classical and a 5km freestyle race on the same day. Unlike Nagano, medals will not be awarded for each leg. Look for Norway's Bente Skari, the gold medalist in Tuesday's 10km classical, to be the leader-as she was at the 2001 World Championships-coming out of the classical portion. The results from the classical phase determine interval start times for this afternoon's freestyle phase.
Curling: Men's game, United States vs. France
This should be an closely contested match. Teams from the United States and France tied for sixth at the 2001 World Championships.
Cross-Country Skiing: Women's pursuit, freestyle phase
The second portion of the pursuit is a 5-kilometer freestyle race, with competitors starting staggered according to their finish in the classical portion. The skier who crosses the finish line first is the winner. Russian Larissa Lazutina is the defending Olympic champion and is the most versatile competitor. Others to watch include Lazutina's teammate, Olga Danilova .

Ice Hockey: Men's game, Canada vs. Sweden
Captain Mario Lemieux leads his Canadian squad onto the ice for the first time at the Salt Lake Games as Canada faces off against Sweden. In addition to the huge number of NHL All-Stars on the rosters of both teams, this game offers a rematch of one of the greatest gold medal matches in Olympic history. In 1994, Sweden's Peter Forsberg won the gold for his country in a shootout that Canadians won't soon forget.
Ice Hockey: Men's game, Czech Republic vs. Germany
All eyes will be on Detroit Red Wings goalie Dominik Hasek and the defending gold medalist Czech Republic, which will take on Germnay in the Czechs' first match of the 2002 Games. Hasek, who had a sterling 5-1 record, 0.97 goals against average and two shutouts in Nagano, was instrumental in his team's surprising gold medal victory over Russia. The Czechs are nearly as deep offensively as they are between the pipes, though, with 1999 NHL MVP Jaromir Jagr keying the first line. Germany is the surprise of the Olympic tournament and easily won its qualifying group.
