Moses had been up on Sinai for a while, when the Israelites impatiently concluded that the God who'd freed them from slavery, parted the Red Sea and worked miracles in the desert for His chosen people wasn't good enough. They wanted a more convenient god. So the Israelites melted their jewelry into a golden calf and worshipped it. This produced undesirable results.
