Normally, someone as liberal as Riordan wouldn't have a chance in the primary. But the party is dispirited, and the bulk of the office holders decided to go for him. Jones and Simon are flawed candidates. Probably a majority of Republicans know their candidacies are hopeless in the general, or think that. And they want to get rid of Davis in a way I don't. Rioridan's ace in the hole however is that Simon and Jones will split the party regular vote.

I think Riordan will lose in the general unless voters are given some other reason to get mad at Davis, because I think he will be percieved as past his prime and too old, and not facile enough in handling the nuances of issues. He comes off a bit fuzzy. Davis will cut him up bad in the debates.

I guess what I am saying is that Davis will be re-elected. Does that help?

Yeah, but I would add that I think it'll be close. If it is, I think that a poor performance with the base will be integral in his defeat.

Sorry for the lack of clarity.

If you can't do better than Riordan as a candidate, Davis ought to win. After NYC Mayor Ed Koch was defeated by the nutty NYC Demonrats in a primary by the despicable David Dinkins, Koch received many pleas to run again. His answer was that NYC had its chance and now it would have to suffer.

Likewise, why should the RINOized GOP in California expect any sympathy? The California GOP under its last RINO Governor Wilson dug itself a fifteen story deep hole by dropping used food all over every Hispanic in the state. This thread has posters who are still demanding that somehow shutting down the borders and making people speak English will save California. The path to Golden State GOP glory will not pass through deportation lane. When Wilson was so intent on making a fool of himself and the party, conservative Chicano Republicans controlled the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
