Another alternative is the morning after pill -- the pill you take the next morning while groaning over last night's mistake and the possible consequences. This pill prevents the joined cells from adhering to the uterus in the same way that a diaphragm would work. I don't think these pills are widely available yet (if at all), but they should be.

There is no relation between the way a diaphram works and the way the morning after pill works.
