February 4, 2002 -- Some of the terror thugs being held at Camp X-Ray are having regrets about their actions, a Muslim Navy cleric said yesterday.

Lt. Abuhena Saiful-Islam, who meets daily with the 158 detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, said that while many continue to maintain their innocence, others are having second thoughts.

They do not get to enjoy their usual pasttime of tossing around headless goats from horseback or shooting women in the head who actually "read". I would like to coddle them too. Except for letting the press in and releasing photos that were open to interpretation, I think the US is doing the exact right thing with these detainees. The "coddling" is having its effect. Please note: "Some of the younger ones in particular are loosening up in their interrogation," an officer said. "They're relating to the interpreters who speak their language and seem to be realizing we Americans are not as bad or scary as they thought we were."

This is the main reason they were brought to Gitmo, extended interrogation and deprogramming. Imagine their suprise when the infidels, the evil Americans, the minions of the great satan give them clean clothes, korans, a padre, medical care, orientation to mecca, decent food, etc. etc. This treatment totally upsets their belief system. They become completely disoriented, and more pliable.

The hard part is going to come down the road when their buddies start kidnapping people to force their release. In fact this has already begun.

I think it's outrageous we are not handling the detainees in a culturally appropriate manner that recognizes the social mores in their part of the world. Haul them out to a soccer stadium at halftime, and behead them!
