Cessna crash kills 1, 1 hurt

Aviation Coast Guard pulls victims from ocean after plane crashes just south of San Onofre nuclear plant. From staff, news-service reports One person died and another was critically injured Tuesday when a single-engine plane crashed off the coast two miles south of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

The victims were pulled from the water by the U.S. Coast Guard. One victim was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla and was in critical condition stemming from hypothermia, officials said.

The Coast Guard in San Diego and the hospital had not released the names of the victims as of Tuesday night. The body of a woman in her 20s was recovered at the scene.

The pilot reportedly told air traffic controllers the plane was experiencing engine trouble.

Federal Aviation officials say the four-seat plane took off from Palomar and was headed to Hawthorne when it crashed at 3:06 p.m. about two miles from the shore, northwest of Oceanside and south of the San Onofre plant.

The Cessna was traveling in airspace that was not restricted, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

San Diego authorities and Coast Guard helicopters all responded to the crash.

The cause of the accident was being invested by the National Transportation Safety Board. Register staff writers Elizabeth Aguilera and Jeff Collins and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
