The article was talking about the State standards of Virginia. Have you read them? In NJ it may be in the core curriculum not to teach about the pilgrims but most districts do.

So, the article may be right. You will have to read the STATE standards of VA. True, your local school may teach about the Plymouth Pilgrims and your state curriculum guides may not.

My link on #38 leads to our state standards, officially called the Standards of Learning, where they speak to the subject of Pilgrims. They're all posted online. Yes, I've read them many times. In fact, I teach them.
