USA Freedom Corps Web Site is Now Up and Running

President launches USA Freedom Corps during State of the Union address

The generous spirit of the American people has fostered a great and long-standing tradition of service. Across the country groups large and small are mobilizing concerned citizens to improve lives and strengthen the civic fabric that holds our communities together.

The USA Freedom Corps, through its participating agencies and programs-- the newly created Citizen Corps, AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and the Peace Corps-- will work with local officials and community groups to offer expanded service opportunities for Americans at home and abroad. Find more information and get involved.

Apologies for my ignorance, but CCC stands for what again? Wasn't it a German program around the 1930's? Thanks in advance.

Nope, it was the Civilian Conservation Corps -- an American program to "fix" the great depression. It was a creation of the New Deal, the beginnings of big government

They're seriously talking about making this compulsory.

Who is? Do you have any quotes? I don't mean to flame, I agree with you. I'd like to know who is advocating slavery so I can vote against them or boycott their business.

Do you have any quotes?

Remember how McCain was smiling in the audience when Bush was talking about this idiotic "Freedom Corps"? I thought the "Patriot Act" took the cake for Orwellian Newspeak.

Der FreeCorps --- the Sudetenland, 1938

"The back of the picture postcard shows the parade in Karlsbad, with a Freekorps unit marching past the German General von Reichenau."

Just swell; first the Ministry of State Security (der "Homeland") and now this, a state-sponsored movement.

I've seen AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Peace Corps in America in the Past, but this new Citizen Corps is intresting.

The Citizen Corps will harness the power of citizens to help prepare their local communities for the threats of terrorism.

I wonder if they will provide the citizens with these anti-terrorism information flyers like the FBI has in Arizona:

Front of Flyer

Back of Flyer

You can find our more about the Citizen Corps at their web site: http://www.citizencorps.gov/

On a cursory glance I don't see many elected officials calling for it to be mandatory. However, there are a lot of (mostly leftist) talking heads saying that -- check out http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=americorps+mccain+mandatory for a quick rundown

No doubt it will start with all the bi-partisanship of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (P.B.S.).

I don't get it, is there are shortage of volunteer opportunities where you live?

Why is it a good thing to Federalize volunteering? We all seem to agree that local government works better than the Feds on education and a whole host of other issues. Why do you presume that the Feds have a better idea of what the volunteer needs of this country than your local volunteer organizations.

If you ask me, this is going to harm volunteerism is those who might otherwise go down to their local volunteer organizations might instead go through the feds who will use them in a less efficient manner.

Thanks for the info!

Just like I suspected, the usual suspects. Most of 'em lefties. How telling that this is such a hit with so called 'conservatives' here on FR.

Keep this up 'conservatives', and you'll have to change your name every now and then just like your friends the socialists, liberals, progressives do.

Ahhhh. Such a heart warming picture. I'd like to get a copy to hang on my office wall when I go to work at the Ministry Department of Peace. I'll have to tell Winston, he might want one, too.

It can be done, just takes a while.

Yeah, I'm keeping my eyes peeled for eeevil constitutionalists. I heard someone mention "the 2nd amendment" and I was going to turn him in, but he got away. And then there's this gang of people down the street, they in believe some guy they call Jesus Christ. They say he's their king. I just know they're all terrorists. If I get my way, they'll all be going to Room 101.

I propose that we start referring to:
People for the American Way (PFAW)
Southern Poverty Law Center
American Civil Liberties Union
Democrat National Committee

et al

as subsidiaries of the King Herod Corporation for Public Browbeating.
