Drudge evidently has people in mailrooms and editing rooms, etc., in several media hotspots such as the Wash Post, the NY Times, Newsweek, etc.

He started his career going through garbage at NBC in Hollywood while working in the gift shop.

The general makeup of the next day's paper is decided by early afternoon of the day before. All he'd need is one source inside the Times.

Also, a lot of Times articles move on the wires a few hours early so papers that subscribe to their syndication service can put them into their own papers the same day.
