January 25, 2002 -- ANOTHER school shooting occurred last week and the headlines were everywhere the same, from Australia to Nigeria. This time the shooting occurred at a university, the Appalachian Law School. As usual, there were calls for more gun control.

"What is so remarkable is that out of 280 separate news stories (from a computerized Nexis-Lexis search) in the week after the event, just four stories mentioned that the students who stopped the attack had guns. Only two local newspapers (the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Charlotte Observer) mentioned that the students actually pointed their guns at the attacker."

I'm sure that Bang List historians have the reference. I believe that two school shootings that year were terminated by people with guns ordering the bullies to stop shooting.

Lott's mistaken as to the Times. They did report that the students had guns. In fact, I was a bit suspicious because they emphasized that both were or had been police officers, as if to say no one who hadn't been a police officer should try this at home, etc.

That's a pretty embarrassing error to make and he especially should not make it. His arguments are too important to the cause.

I live in New York, where people -- and not only wealthy white socialists -- say that with a straight face. Three years ago, I taught a classroom full of working-class Hispanic women who almost all felt the same way.

Doubt it, CC. In New York, world capitol of feminism, only once have I ever heard -- back in the late '80s -- of a news story about a woman using a gun to defend herself. And she was a Haitian immigrant. She wa arrested, but charges were later dropped, or she got probation. More typical are NOW leaders and wealthy, local socialists like Rep. Carolyn Maloney beating the NYPD over the head for its "racism," and then, when the cops pull back, and black guys go wild in Central Park, demanding that heads roll at One Police Plaza.

Oh, yeah. There's also that year-round road show where the feminists go on TV and at public events with a "rapist" wearing a gray, padded, 50's-style spaceman suit. Whenever he lunges at one of the unarmed demonstratoresses, she kicks him in the groin, he crumples to the ground, and she beats him to a pulp. That's feminist empowerment, for ya'!

One would think that folks would have picked up on the FACT that 99% of people killed by guns are killed by their own governments.

Especially in the Left's much-revered 20th Century...frankly, I'm not much interested in 'joining the 20th Century'. ;^)

Kudos to the NYPost for finally getting into the discussion. I appreciate that paper more and more every day.

Yeah, the Post is far from ideal, but it's the only New York paper that will even occasionally run this sort of story.

Most folks don't know that. I didn't either, during many, many years spent in government schools. And when you start providing that sort of info to students in government schools, you no longer have work teaching.

Hey, BTW there aren't too many people who make the connection between GCA'68 and the occurrences of the decade itself. However, once one begins looking at the timeline, sponsors of the bill, etc, the whole mess becomes quite clear.

I was fortunate to have been in the position of being OUTSIDE the US at the time, as well as having more important things with which to concern myself. I really didn't know anything about the events at home, nor, at the time, did I care. The truth was driven home to me one cold November day in San Francisco, when I left the gates of Travis AFB,happy as a clam to be "back in the World", and ran face first into the reality. The culture shock was of mammoth proportions, I felt like an alien, who just arrived via starship. I couldn't figure out what I had done (or not) to be treated the way I was. Heck, on that day, all I wanted was a shot of VO & a beer(or several) and a phonecall(or several) to Mrsgwmoore telling her I was OK and would be back in Philly soon. What I got, you most likely can surmise, was totally different. It's been 31+ years and the mental image can be called up just as clear and crisp as the day it was formed, and the scars on the mind are just as painful. And yes, I have been sober since May '80 thank you ;-) Something must have gone right. though, as I am still married to the same fine woman, and have a wonderful 30 yr old daughter.
