If you read the whole article it looks like this is phase I on closing the borders?
The Bush MO is to do things in small steps !

This is a major, expensive program. Huge database, awesome computer power. Lots of new bureaucrats to run the system, and many midlevel managers. Many court challenges by ACLU and other ambulance chasers.

I like the idea of making alien's drivers licenses expire on the day their visas expire.

There is already such a system in existence. However, the "technology" it relies on is a piece of paper stapled into the alien's passport.

A White House official said a technology for the tracking system has not been chosen, but that biometric equipment -- which can identify people through biological markers, such as their faces, palms or irises -- will be considered. Can someone please explain this further. I am unclear how this tracking system will make the borders more secure. If I read it correctly, citizens will not have to present biometric identification--and so I presume only their passports/papers. Noncitizens declaring themselves as noncitizens will have to submit to the biometric data collection.
Here is the problem I forsee. Biometric data is virtually impossible to fake, but papers (passports, etc.) are not. If a terrorist wanted to gain access to the country, it would still be simpler--even under this new system--to fake paper identification. So, that leaves only 2 possibilities:
a) Only honest noncitizens will be tracked. In fact, I am not sure how the U.S. would convince noncitizens to submit to biometric data collection, but for the sake of arguement, I will assume the answer will be no entry without it.
b) This will not just apply to noncitizens. Therefore, no likelihood of forgery.
Please correct me if I am reading this wrong.

I have some simple solutions that would save money. You don't need the latest technology at a high price to solve every problem. The problem with the biometric thing is that we'd accept it for the aliens but I fear it would then be a quick jump to use it on everybody.
1. Fine people who hire illegals HEFTY penalties.
2. No welfare whatsover in ANY form to aliens. Stop the instant citizenship on babies born here.
Take away the reason to live here illegaly.
3. NO visas to nationals from terrorist nations.
4. Fire officials who are turning a blind eye. Clean out these agencies.
By instituting these things enough man power will be freed up to go after the rest.
I heard that Georgia was trying to pass legislation to allow ILLEGAL aliens to obtain drivers lisences. Now do you really think that our problem is a lack of biometric tracking technology?

Why hasn't anyone on this thread offered a slippery slope argument?
Or is that the administration's strategery?
We'll create the monstrous database for just the bad illegals that everyone hates, then we'll show that the "citizen loophole" needs to be patched, and then we'll flip the switch to universal biometrics for everybody in the US, "for the children's safety."

Sounds like the position of Federal Bounty Hunter (somebody's got to go after those who are overstaying their visa limits) just might become a growth industry.
I wonder how much the job pays...

The "entry-exit tracking system," to be developed by the Immigration and Naturalization Service... HELLO!!! PRESIDENT BUSH, INS IS THE PROBLEM, NOT THE SOLUTION!!! Stop giving the INS more responsibility when they've demonstrated already that they don't know who's here legally, and who's not!

The "entry-exit tracking system," to be developed by the
Immigration and Naturalization Service, Well, that says it all about the success of this operation.
