For it is not right for man to unrestraindedly to search out things that the Lord has willed be hidden from himselfIf this really is Palmer's quote of the Institutes, I think he just botched Calvin's latin. The phrasing should be "things that the Lord has willed be hidden from him" (i.e., hidden from Man), not "hidden from himself" (a botched translation).
However, your Beveridge citation is the authoritative translation of Institutes anyway. "For it is not right that man should with impunity pry into things which the Lord has been pleased to conceal within himself".

It seems you also suspect the source of the "translation". It is inconceivable that Calvin believed God hid things from Himself in the matter of predestination. We've seen tampering and deliberate manufacture of such material before. Even from otherwise well-respected sources.
However, your Beveridge citation is the authoritative translation of Institutes anyway.
Well, you know quite well my fondness for time-tested translations and authorities. I think that time is something of a sieve and strains out the truly bad and the weak.
ctd, I'm still waiting to find out the source of your quote of Calvin. I want to see it for myself. You should have no problem in citing your source.
