This article makes me wonder why on earth the dems opened this can of worms.

Good question. I can only speculate. First, I think the Democrats are getting extremely frustrated and angry at hitting brick walls every time the take on George Bush. He outwits and outmaneuvers them at every turn. It's doubly frustrating because they were convinced that Bush was a fumbling, bumbling idiot who barely knew enough to come inside when it was raining. When people are extremely frustrated and angry, they do stupid, desperate things.

Secondly, I think the Democrats are looking for anything to "pay back" the GOP for daring to impeach Clinton. It's not enough to bottle up Bush's agenda in the Senate, as Daschle is doing. They want a scandal they can use to bring down Bush. In their haste to tie Enron around Bush's neck, they neglected to consider the possibility that they would be unsuccessful in that endeavor, but instead might reap the unlikely consequences that they would be tieing Enron around their own necks. The presstitutes have been working 24/7 to help the Democrats in this regard, but so far, it's just not sticking and finally the presstitutes are reaching a crossroads. Do they want to continue beating on Enron even though deeper investigation is pointing clearly to improprieties in Clinton's dealings with Enron? Tough choice. Each Enron rock that is turned over seems to have a bunch of worms under it and the faces on lots of those worms are that of Clinton.

Feel free to add to my speculations.

"They want a scandal they can use to bring down Bush."

These are the same people that denied, ignored, and just plain stone-walled all the massive evidence - in so many areas - regarding the Clintons and their combination crime-treason machine.

Now, it is as though the scales of vision - moral and ethical blinders, so to speak - have fallen from their eyes. They seek something that so far is just not there. And in fact, in doing so, the true corruption of the last eight years quickly comes back into view, for all to see.

I love the smell of burnt liberals in the morning!

Everything you said, plus a couple of other ideas.

The Energy issue is boiling hot in DC. The 'Cheney Task Force' was a target from day one - because it was secret. The Dems vociferously protested, saying Reps were equally furious about Hillary's Health Care Task Force. They refuse to understand the objection: HILLARY WAS NOT ELECTED!

If you remember, during the run-up to the election, the 'BIG OIL' and ANWAR issues were front and center of the argument by the Dems - Bush would poison the environment, destroy the pristine Alaskan wilderness, etc. Bush won the election and that took the wind out of their sails until the energy bill started to percolate.

All of this served to produce a result little noticed by the Dems and the press at the time: the public is not surprised at the connection between Bush/Cheney and energy. Bush was talking up policies that would benefit Enron and others more than 2 years ago.

Great analysis. It looked like a Clinton op from the first, and it's good to see it being proven--even though no one in the media really wants to go down that road.
