The Germans killed Poles, you know. They especially killed priests. Thousands of Polish priests died at the hands of the Nazis.
A hero of John Paul's, Fr. Maximilian Kolbe, died at the hands of the Germans in Auschwitz. His crime was speaking out against the killings of Jews.
Another heroine of his, Sr. Teresa Benedicta (St. Edith Stein) also died in Auschwitz. Her crime was that she was born Jewish.
John Paul II canonized both of them.
