Buchanan reminds me of the salesman in The Music Man. He creates a horrific situation in peoples' minds and then offers himself as the saviour of the day.

Beyond that, one wonders how much damage Buchanan himself has done to his cause.

His ludicrous presidential campaigns have placed him in the LaRouche section of American politics. Even on things he's right about (there are some), the Buchanan imprimature gives it a taint of hysterical fear-mongering.
