I'm not sure where it was exactly, but we were on the highway (I remember the billboard announcing that I was entering the "George C. Wallace Whiteway") during a brief cut through a corner of Alabama. Without consulting a map, I am guessing it was the southeastern corner of the state. It was a long time ago.

Probaly it. Dothan is SE Alabama as is Ft. Rucker, the stomping grounds of Army Aviation. George Corley Wallace was Governor in the 60s when I was there. From Dothan its a straight shot south to Panama City.
