To: Looking for Diogenes
In reference to post 237, I wasn't talking about either Romania or Luxembourg. Admittedly, my question was on a tangent to this thread, but please address the question.

Why would the governments and peoples of Switzerland and Ireland be offended by the particular persons appointed to be American Ambassadors to those countries?

And while we are at it, how would offending the citizens of one country by our government's [un]diplomatic ambassadorial appointments justify offending another's?

The government might be offended because they are not getting a legitimate diplomat, but rather a businessman who was chosen because he donated a lot of money to some political campaigns. These countries are probably used to it because the western European nations are plum assignments, especially for a rich man who can entertain lavishly. I'm not sure that France or England have ever had a career diplomat. The real work probably is carried out by lower ranked staff.

I doubt most people in a nation think very much about the ambassadors that other nations send to them. How many current ambassadors to the US can you name of the top of your head?
