I wonder if it was Jamie Rubin (Mr. Amanpour, former spokesperson for Madeleine Albright.) Robert Rubin, former Secretary of the Treasury, would have had a lot more clout, and would, I think, have been a more plausible intercessor.

The title of another thread, which I am about to consult, seems to confirm it was Bob Rubin. I think that indicates a much closer Clinton connection.
