I've been told by a reputable source that recess appointments can be made, but that the appointment is only good until the next congress gets seated. In other words, these appointments are not for a full term, but rather only until the next congressional elections.

Exactly - at which time, after fall 2002 VICTORY, we'll have the Senate back for the 108th Congress to make 'em official!

US Constitution, Article II, section 2, paragraph 3:

The President shall have Power to fill up all Vanancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next session

You don't need a reputable to source to know that. It is common knowledge and has been done as long as we have had presidents.
