I live in Los Angeles.

A hundred years ago, "a Land virtually laid waste with little population." It was just there for the taking, I suppose.

Precisely, if you go back a just few decades further.

California's presence as one of the United States is a consequence of the Mexican-American War. British authority over Transjordan is a consequence of WWI.

That's how maps get drawn.
