Actually, the statistic is true. The church is growing at a 4.7% rate in the US and faster outside the US. What city do you live in? I'd say as a rule, there are more members out West, but there are pockets of lots of members in the East and South also.

The 4.7% number is misleading. Once on the church roles, it is almost impossible to have your name removed.

People have remained on the roles of the Mormon church for as long as decades after their last visit to a local ward.
