HAVANA (AP) - Six members of the U.S. congress met with Cuban President Fidel Castro before sitting down later in the day for talks with a dozen members of the political opposition.
``We have to work together, we have to put the Cold War behind us,'' Rep. William Delahunt, D-Mass., said at the end of the sessions Monday that gave the visiting Congressional delegation a view of both ends of Cuban political spectrum.
Among the dissident group was well-known human rights activist Elizardo Sanchez, of the Cuban Commission on Human Rights and National Reconciliation, at its hotel.
The U.S. lawmakers arrived in Cuba on Thursday, accompanied by Sally Grooms Cowal, president of the Cuba Policy Foundation, a Washington-based anti-embargo group, and Cuba specialist Phil Peters of the Lexington Institute, a public policy organization in Arlington, Va.
Delahunt traveled with Reps. Jo Ann Emerson, a Republican from Missouri, and Democrats Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts, Vic Snyder of Arkansas, William Clay of Missouri and Hilda Solis of California.
Specter slams U.S. House over Cuba: Takes fellow lawmakers to task for not cooperating with [Killer]
Why isn't Senator Spector helping President Bush get a hearing for Otto Reich?
Elian's "hostess" in D. C. (Sally Grooms Cowal) escorts seven U.S. representatives to Cuba
And OJ said he didn't do it.
I guess those would be, what? The tyrannical side and the despotic side of the spectrum. Absolutely amazing.
Stop Otto Reich site-- Who we are: The Coalition for a Sensible Latin America Policy (CSLAP) is an informal coalition of church groups, think tanks and advocacy organizations committed to promoting a democratic foreign policy, the peaceful settlement of disputes and cooperative approaches to international issues. These groups include: the Center for International Policy, the Cuba Committee for Democracy, the Foreign Policy In Focus project at the Institute for Policy Studies/Interhemispheric Resource Center, and the Washington Office on Latin America.
The war against terrorism: Whose side is Sen. Chris Dodd on?-- by Gerard Jackson TNA News with Commentary Monday 3 December 2001 -[Excerpt] Why is Christopher Dodd, Democratic Senator from Connecticut, trying to sabotage the war on terrorism? President Bush nominated the highly experienced and very able Otto Reich as Assistant Secretary for Western Hemispheric Affairs. Since then Dodd has done everything within his power to prevent the appointment from being finalised.

So what's really driving Dodd? What makes him such so hateful, divisive and even subversive of Bush's presidential authority? I have found that there is one common factor that links the political likes of Dodd and that factor is the Washington-based Marxist Institute for Policy Studies. This is what Brian Crozier (a fellow of the prestigious Institute for the Study of Conflict, an eminent author and an expert on the Soviet Union) said of this organisation: "The IPS is the perfect intellectual front for Soviet activities which would be resisted if they were to originate openly from the KGB." Ex-ambassadors debate Cuba policy, agree to disagree---Elian's "hostess" in D.C., Sally Grooms Cowal, (past president and CEO of Youth for Understanding) until he was shipped back to Castro, is calling in her chips.
Youth For Understanding--February 22, 2001 -- To all of my friends and colleagues in the YFU World: Greetings. I want to tell you about my plans. I will be the President of the Cuba Policy Foundation, a newly established non-profit, non-partisan organization, which has been set up to promote normalization of US-Cuba relations. It is a challenge I believe our nation needs to address. I was approached by the backers of this Foundation who, given my previous service as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and US Ambassador in the Caribbean, as well as my current involvement with Cuba, have persuaded me that I am in an absolutely unique position to successfully execute this task. After considerable personal agonizing, I decided to accept. I will, therefore, be stepping down as President of YFU, although I expect to remain actively involved as a member of the Board of Trustees, like all Trustees serving without compensation.
Cowal's group (Cuba Policy Foundation) received its initial funding from the ARCA FOUNDATION, a wealthy organization devoted to more contact and fewer trade restrictions with Cuba. Its chairman is SMITH BAGLEY, a grandson of tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds and a major Democratic donor. ******(Remember the two DNC fundraisers with Elian as their trophy?)*******
( UNDER THE GUISE OF RELIGION, NCC, UMC, PASTORS FOR PEACE)-- Another one of the most militant, fanatic and violent "religious" and "humanitarian" organizations part of this network in the U.S. appearing to be working for Castro's tyranny are the "interreligious" group Pastors for Peace. These "pastors" as well as the NCC have received grants from the ARCA FOUNDATION, which according to scholar Irving Louis Horowitz, is a "highly pro-Castro and partisan," grant-giving agency. From 1994 to1998, ARCA awarded about $3 million for pro-Castro projects.
Jay Nordlinger: Who Cares About Cuba?--[Excerpt] American celebrities who trot to Cuba almost never see the country in which Cubans have to live; they see a Potemkin Cuba, set up for visitors and off-limits to Cubans. Outright leftists from America have always journeyed to Havana, to use and be used: Robert Redford and Ed Asner, Maxine Waters and Barbara Lee (two congresswomen from California). Other pilgrims, however, are less malicious than they are trendy and naïve: Leonardo DiCaprio, Woody Harrelson, an assortment of pop musicians. A few years ago, the fashion models Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss had an audience with Castro. Campbell hailed the dictator as "a source of inspiration to the world." Castro complimented the ladies on their "spirituality." Jack Nicholson, too, had a high time in Cuba. He drank choice rum, smoke choice cigars, and buddied for three hours with Castro, afterward pronouncing Cuba "a paradise."
Such behavior may seem merely ridiculous, but it is not without its effect on dissidents. Valladares confirms the obvious: that it demoralizes them terribly. "It demoralizes not only the resistance inside Cuba, but all of us who have struggled for many years while we wait for the solidarity of those who believe in democracy." He may wait for that solidarity a long time. The likes of Naomi Campbell and Jack Nicholson, sadly, have far more influence on Americans than Armando Valladares ever could. [End Excerpt]
Getting both ends of the political spectrum is very important. It is why Congressional delegates meet with Klansmen after meeting with civil rights leaders, or met with Nazi SS officers after meeting with concentration camp survivors. (/sarcasm)
These people make me sick. This isn't a question over differences in the political spectrum, but of basic human rights. It is about right and wrong, and not just simply a difference in opinion. Unfortunately, Fidel is their hero because they aspire to the control over the daily life of people here that Fidel has over there. They worship Fidel even though he is the antithesis of the Constitution that they are sworn to uphold. The communists live on in our own Congress. Who are the idiots that keep re-electing these fools?
Why are Americans so uneducated about communism?
Nathan Pusey, former Harvard president dead--Mr. Pusey was the target of attacks from both the political right and left during most of his years as a university leader - initially because of a coincidence in geography. He began his teaching career at Lawrence College in Appleton, Wis., near the birthplace of Senator McCarthy, and later served as the college's president from 1944 to 1953. He and McCarthy, who was first elected to the US Senate in 1946, quickly became enemies. During the 1952 Senate race, Mr. Pusey published a pamphlet outlining the Republican senator's public record and highlighting McCarthy's unproved claims that the US government was infiltrated with communists.
The senator, in turn, denounced Mr. Pusey. On hearing the news that Mr. Pusey would head east to Cambridge, McCarthy said, ''Harvard's loss is Wisconsin's gain.''

Castro Spies Target U.S. Defense Wes Vernon, NewsMax.com Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001/[Excerpt] WASHINGTON - Intelligence operatives for communist Cuban dictator Fidel Castro are working in the U.S. to get their spies or unwitting "dupes into influential positions in America's defense establishment." Further, Castro is himself a "terrorist" whose intelligence service has a "biological weapons branch." Moreover, he is willing to aid whatever terrorist seeks to destroy the U.S, including Osama bin Laden's network. And he has sought to learn as much as he can about how the U.S. Postal Service works. That information emerged at a Tuesday panel discussion in the Washington area that included two former Cuban intelligence officers who have defected to the U.S. Cuba's major subversive focus of attention here is the U.S. military establishment, according to defectors Jorge Masetti and Jose Cohen. Professors at various campuses are aiding and abetting Castro, they allege. [End Excerpt]
Right. It's what they deserve - to dine with a scunk.
