Like thousands of other music lovers, Scott Hurring recently downloaded a Napster-like music file-sharing program called Grokster to test drive for chasing tunes. A programmer at advertising services agency Graphic Type and a Net veteran, Hurring disliked the program and uninstalled it. Or so he thought.

Like thousands of other music lovers, Scott Hurring recently downloaded a Napster-like music file-sharing program called Grokster to test drive for chasing tunes.

Turns out that the persistent piece of software (DLDER.exe; ed.) was a Trojan horse -- that is, it appeared to be one thing but in reality was another. In fact, it placed software on Hurring's hard drive that recorded every URL he visited, as well as some of the user IDs he employed on his Web travels.

The phrase "Set a thief to catch a thief" comes to mind.

This is not news. At least in the case of Bearshare and others, the spyware has been on their software for quite awhile. It has also been publicized as well as reported by users on sights like CNET.com.

Still, getting this word out to more people is good. If you're going to download free on a peer to peer network, the only one that does not have spyware (to my knowledge) is WINMX. But, even with this- be aware that you will experience a spike in UDP port probes. (get zone alarm)

Still, to be safe a user should download ad-aware or another like program that sniffs out and deletes spyware from your system.

Is this Trojan horse planting Israeli company related to the one that bugged the White House under Clinton?

In case you don't already know...you can get it to run each time you boot up. So, there's really no need to remember it's there except to not delete it...

Oh yeah, I think we all try to get the word out about not web surfing "in the nude".

I don't believe Morpheus or WinMx have any spyware. They are the two best PTP I have found. Morpheus is faster but WinMx is more powerful and is better for finding high bitrate MP3's. Morpheus is great for finding software and registration cracks.
