Why, according to this, not only negroes but white people outside of Great Britain and America are not spoken of in that instrument. The English, Irish and Scotch, along with white Americans, were included to be sure, but the French, Germans and other white people of the world are all gone to pot along with the Judge’s inferior races. I had thought the Declaration promised something better than the condition of British subjects; but no, it only meant that we should be equal to them in their own oppressed and unequal condition. According to that, it gave no promise that having kicked off the King and Lords of Great Britain, we should not at once be saddled with a King and Lords of our own.

Hence, the silly notion of the "takeover over America by those of a different cultural background than the founding fathers" was ridiculous in 1857, and was rendered utterly absurd by subsequent waves of immigration.
Just for the record, are you telling me that it will make NO difference in the freedom and opportunity offered by the United States if the culture changed from one that valued promises and written contracts, to one that sees promises and contracts as conveniences to be broken when they don't benefit you anymore or circumventend by bribes when inconvenient (as is the culture in several South American countries)? Please explain how that cultural change would not fundamentally alter the structure of our government and our freedoms.
The United States is culturally superior to every other nation, regardless of our racial composition, because in the past we were so good at inculcating immigrants with the "American" culture. Now we can't, because it isn't politically correct, and we will see serious repercussions from it. The solution isn't to end immigration; it is to restart our cultural education efforts...
There were no government documents printed in Italian and English. There were no separate Italian instructions when you called a toll free number or a government agency.
This was the message that I received as an immigrant in the early sixties: "Our culture (American) is dominant; your's (Italian ) is recessive; assimilate or be left behind.
My diet is still very much Italian (my first clue that American culture might be lacking was my introduction to the hotdog), I still speak Italian at home when I visit my parents. Even though I've only a high school education my English is spoken with near perfect diction, and without trace of accent. I gave up nothing throughout the process of assimilation and gained everything. It doesn't seem to me to be the same today.
That isn't to say I'm against immigation because I'm not. I realize that the reason so many hard working Mexicans come here is because it provides them with a better life. How can I possibly hold that against them? I also realize that I pay only $2.99/lb for mushrooms because the migrant worker will harvest them and my fat and lazy fellow Americans will not.
So God bless the immigrants of course, but I do think that the idea of America's greatness holds less sway than it did when I emigrated to the US.

ENRON demonstrates that white-bread, (christian) God-fearing, good-ole goobbers from Texas can lie, cheat and steal with the best of the third-world grifters. But you are right about one thing - we do have a superior business climate in this country. because those fine, upstanding crooks in Armani suits won't get away with it. Thanks to strong market regulation - enforced by agencies created by Teddy Roosevelt and the progressive Republicans - the Enron consigliari will be held accountable. It is rather humorous that the same folk who fume over immigration also deride agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission as "socialists." And that reminds me - from which cultural tradition did Karl Marx and Friedrich Engles spring?
Many immigrants come here to escape oppression and to enjoy our superior business climate. And once here, they are fiercely supportive and protective of our business climate and the system of regulation that keeps it honest - unlike many of the native-born, who constantly whine about "socialism." Perhaps that's because the immigrant know what true socialism is, and the native-born whiners simply don't have a clue.
Let's take this pari passu, shall we?
1. In 150 Years of Irish Immigration to the United States, some 4 Million Irishmen came (more or less legally) to the United States.
2. Most of them spoke English, were members of a Christian sect (although a somewhat unpopular group), were familiar (all too) with Anglo-Saxon jurisprudence, and mores.
3. More Mexicans have entered the US illegally in the last 5 years than all the legal Irish, Poles, and Eastern European Jewish immigrants combined. And as Pat Buchanan, that horrible racist, has pointed out, "there are many Mexicos."
When the US assimilated 5 Million Legal Italian Immigrants over a 50 year period, the ballot was not printed in their language ... indeed one could not vote without passing a rudimentary English test. Today, in LA alone, there are 5 Million people who do not speak English, and whose children (American Citizens) go to school in Spanish.
The point is, Buchanan Bashers, the numbers of Third World immigrants are of an entirely different magnitude ... say 20-1 ... over what the country assimilated with European immigration.
Most American families today have relatives by blood and marriage who have Irish, German, English, Polish, Italian, Russian, and even Jewish antecedents. How is this level of assimilation supposed to occur if the population base suddenly becomes 60% hispanic?
Buchanan is not saying this is a bad thing. Or a good thing. It is merely a true thing.

That's true of many immigrants but not all by a long shot. You could look around at certain areas with extremely high immigration and see how many are not working and are moving directly into housing projects. They are not learning English because they don't really care to compete for good jobs. I know of a 15 year old couple who came from Chihuahua and had a baby a few months later in the county hospital. They moved in with a relative also from Mexico who receives SSI and food stamps. The baby was born last March and neither parent is working yet. And we have a lot of that going on here.
