But despite his words of caution, the famed talker indicated that some of his hearing had already returned.

I think the author has his facts misplaced: I heard that line and took it to mean that when they ultimately turn on the implant that he'll then hear everything.

Also, from someone (me) who almost got on the show today, I can say firsthand that the current Mr. Snerdly advised me that Rush still couldn't hear anything and provided some quick behavioral advice to make the call (that didn't happen) flow better.

Alancarp is indeed correct. After some double checking I learned that, despite Rush's first person reference, "you hear every little thing," he was referring to his friend, not himself.

I was taping the broadcast but had to flip the tape just as he was saying that his implant had yet to be "hooked up," and therefore missed the comment that made this clear.

Sorry about the misreport. The NewsMax copy and headline have been corrected to reflect those statements.

Didn't Rush say that he conferred with some of the most successful implant patients, and THEY told him that the first week was rather traumatic? It sounded to me like he was relaying others' info to him.

He must have rested his voice well, as it was very smooth and didn't have the rough edges of hoarseness that it had the last few days before he left last month.
