FR: First Installment of New Year's Changes
Posted on 01/03/2002 4:29:19 AM PST by John Robinson
Okay, I may have found the bug with the sidebars, and so they are back.
Also, I've made some significant changes to the structure of the forum. The sidebars are now treated as if they were topics, and threads can now be listed under many topics. When displaying a thread, thread's topics are listed to the right, clicking a topic's name will take you to a topic index, or a list of threads in that topic. In the future, keywords will be listed as well, and will be handled similarly.
Speaking of the future...
In the future, you will be able to place any topic into the sidebar, and in any order you desire.
In the future, the bump lists will also be treated as topics.
In the future, there will be an ability to add threads to a topic after the thread has been posted.
In the future, user's bookmarks will be treated as their own semi-private topic.
In the future, it will be possible for users to create their own topics, and remove threads from topics they administer/own. And the administator/owner/creator of each topic can decide who can add threads to their topic and who cannot, a membership list of sorts. (This is how I will prevent others from putting threads in your bookmarks.)
Although I should make this very clear. Topic administrators will not be able to affect the comments on the thread--topics are to be considered only a collection of threads, a way to organize the forum into meaningful categories. These are not mini-forums.

I tried posting to that thread and got a screen telling me that that topic was closed or some such thing - in essence, I couldn't post to that thread.

I'll be happy when we can do searches on keywords, as the article titles often aren't sufficient.
To: John Robinson
Thanks for the hard work.

" Can we abuse anybody we want to?" ROTFL! Now that open doors to a world of possibilities!
John, what's up with the bookmarks? There an important thread going about the difference between real southern BBQ and that other stuff amd I couldn't bookmark it.
To: TroutStalker;Hugh Akston
when I try to use search, I get a page that says simply: Go Oh good! I thought I was being rejected. ;)

But there's no need for my being
insulting, eh? {g}

It may very well be that the very action of my having asked may fulfill that particular requirement, dear....

I have no idea what you just said, but it sounds very impressive. We could use a good "Side Bar", I'll have a rum and coke.
