I agree with you. My Dad looked at the video and believed bin Laden looked "like a different person" but to my eyes he looks exactly the same.
I believe the difference is, as you point out, the lighting. If the light shining on a person is northernly light, or if it's reflecting off something "cool" (blue-ish), that changes the way a person skin looks in a very dramatic way, just the way the video looks. Even if the light is too bright for the camcorder, that can cause the "look" of the video.
I think a lot of people in the West get "spoiled" by normal "news" video that is almost always shot with a whole crew -- makeup people, lighting experts, color-correction in post-production, etc. Raw stuff like this just looks strange to some people...
If you look at the bin Laden video and look past the trivial lighting effects, it's hard to see much of a difference.
