I just watched a special on Pearl Harbor, and was reminded of many things. For one, America took that attack so much more seriously than we have taken 911---yet fewer people were killed in the PH attack than in the WTC attack.
Perhaps in a world in which we are innured with violence and death---rampant, out-of-control crime in the streets, where police are report-takers, ceding entire areas of cities to gangs; abortion; Waco and Elian; etc.---it will take much more than three thousand deaths to make people realize that it's a bad, mean world out there, that all is not goodness and light. That there are bad people out there in the world who have zero-zilch-nada INKLING of the meaning of Judeo-Christian values, of mercy, of individualism, of freedom, of compassion. They understand only what animals understand: survival. Death. No amount of reasoning will work for someone whose world-view from birth is totally alien to the CIVLIZED (Western) world.
