Dec. 19 -- TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ Federal prosecutors are still trying to determine if a Tulsa man accused of killing a postal carrier as he was making his rounds should undergo a mental evaluation.

Jason M. Weed said he understood the first-degree murder charge against him in a court appearance Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Sam Joyner. But federal Public Defender Paul Brunton said a doctor retained by the defense is still trying to evaluate Weed's mental condition.

Weed, 27, is accused of killing Robert W. Jenkins, 30, of Broken Arrow as Jenkins was delivering mail Dec. 12 at Place One apartments in Tulsa.

Weed is charged in U.S. District Court under a statute that governs the murder of federal employees who are engaged in their official duties.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Doug Horn said he is still considering whether to ask for a mental competency exam, which generally would take anywhere from two to four months. In determining whether a defendant is competent to stand trial, the court would focus on the ability of the accused to understand the charge and to assist in his or her defense.

Weed acted irrationally and walked down a street firing a gun into the air before being arrested, police have said. Horn asked Tuesday that Weed remain in custody while the case is pending. The defense waived its right to a hearing on the motion. link.

Thanks for the link. What a mug! That guy looks like a five-star loser. Sad thing is, if he really was firing randomly into the air before killing Robert Jenkins, the PD is probably right that they won't be able to get him on first degree murder. I don't like the specifics of the law on this charge, but they are what they are, and haven't changed for a couple hundred years or more. Frankly, premeditation, which involves thinking, is probably beyond this thug's mental capacity. Hopefully, they can get him locked up in a very secure mental hospital for life.

As for the individual to whom your post was addressed, it appears that he somehow talked his way out of the penalty box long enough to make the obnoxious post in #87 -- and then got sent back to the penalty box pronto. Must have set some kind of FR record for shortest time out of the box. Hope he's in for longer this time; JohnD9207 and caitlynsmom have taken more than enough cr*p from this idiot.

Well Government...Weed screwed the pooch because he might have fired a random shot before killing Robert...but then he walked up to Robert minutes later and fired a shot from less than 6 feet away Directly at him killing him instantly. Doesn't matter though...nothing will ever bring back my Son (in law). Best we can hope for now is life at best and 45 years at worst. Thanks for caring bro...you pulled up the stories off the Tulsa World that will at least explain what that animal did.

Thanks Freepers...it's nice to know that compassionate conservative's exist for my daughter and granddaughter.

I was also asked to ping others to this thread.
So I did, I pinged others here so they could pray for you JohnD9207 and your daughter,caitlynsmom.

"Robert Jenkins, 30, the victim of an apparent random act of violence.
He will never go home and his 18 month old daughter will not grow up with her father."

Sad Ping

My deepest sympathies. It's hard to imagine how painful it is to lose a loved one in that manner. My prayers go out to both of you.

One day at a time sweetheart. Your beautiful little girl will grow up blessed knowing that her daddy loves her, for love does not end with death, love is forever.

Caitlyn is twice blessed. Not only will she feel the love of her father, she will know the love of her mother and grandfather. If only every child could be so lucky.

My prayers are with you and your family. God Bless You this Christmas and always.

I only clicked a link that mountaineer provided -- mountaineer gets the credit for tracking down a good link and posting it.

Glad to hear there were circumstances not mentioned in the article which may get the perp a 1st degree conviction. It's just too easy for people locked up on mental grounds to "prove" they've recovered and get out in a relatively short time. This guy clearly needs to be locked up permanently.

Also, just FYI, I'm a "sis", not a "bro".

Best wishes to you and your family during this heartbreaking time.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. I am shocked at what had happened. Caitlynsmon and JohnD, my heartfelt prayers and wishes go out to you, your daughter and your family. May God welcome your husband into his infinite mercy and love. May he rest in perfect peace under his wings.

Safely Home

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.

All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.

And He came Himself to meet me
In that way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus' arm to lean on
Could I have one doubt or dread?

Then you must not grieve so sorely
For I love you dearly still:
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's Will.

There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth---
You shall rest in Jesus' land.

When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

To: Snow Bunny;
What a terrible tragedy, I can't even think right now to form a sentence. Thank you for flagging me.

Here are some words from the Word that have sustained me: The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace. Psalm 29:11

YOU WROTE:

"I note that Oklahoma is real hard on murderers."

#########################################################

I'd have to say...that ''real hard'' would not be the words I'd use..Maybe the word ''just'' would be appropiate..? As in justice is served....when the state of OK. follows thru on the law.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family John........

Mega Prayers going out from the gwmoore household for John's family at this time of personal tragedy.

May the state of Oklahoma hold a speedy trial, a speedy sentencing, and then prompt execution of justice on this slimeball.

Keep the Faith for Freedom

MAY GOD BLESS AND PROTECT THIS HONORABLE REPUBLIC.
