Random violence claims carrier Robert Jenkins, husband and father, did not walk his Tulsa mail route Wednesday thinking that it would be his day to die. He left for his job, as most of us do, expecting to work his shift and then return home to those he held dear. Things did not work out that way for Jenkins, 30, the victim of an apparent random act of violence. He will never go home and his 18 month old daughter will not grow up with her father. The nine-year postal veteran took a bullet in the back. Witnesses claim the bullet came from the gun of Jason Weed, 27. Weed was arrested a few minutes later near the Brookside district, carrying a loaded gun and acting erratically. Weed was booked into the Tulsa Jail on a first-degree murder complaint. By all accounts Jenkins was a dedicated worker in a job that can be thankless and physically demanding. "Everyone liked him," said John Harrison, president of the Tulsa chapter of the National Letter Carriers Association. "He was a good employee." Around Oklahoma, flags at post offices were at half staff and a fund for the family was set up at the Tulsa Postal Federal Credit Union. Letter carriers fight bad weather, snarling dogs, heavy traffic and other hazzards on a day-in, day-out basis. And while a postal handler died this fall from inhalation anthrax, no route carrier had been a homicide victim in a couple of years. The last homicides included a letter carrier who was shot at a Los Angeles Jewish community center. Another was murdered in a carjacking in rural Mississippi. In fiscal 2000, postal inspectors responded to 1,037 postal related assults and credible threats. Their investigations led to 441 arrests. "The thought of delivering mail and encountering what happened (to Jenkins) Couldn't possibly be anticipated by any letter carrier," one postal supervisor said. Indeed it could not. In this year, when so much violence has rained down on America, the death of Robert Jenkins marks yet another instance of man's inhumanity to man.
Jason M. Weed said he understood the first-degree murder charge against him in a court appearance Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Sam Joyner. But federal Public Defender Paul Brunton said a doctor retained by the defense is still trying to evaluate Weed's mental condition.
Weed, 27, is accused of killing Robert W. Jenkins, 30, of Broken Arrow as Jenkins was delivering mail Dec. 12 at Place One apartments in Tulsa.
Weed is charged in U.S. District Court under a statute that governs the murder of federal employees who are engaged in their official duties.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Doug Horn said he is still considering whether to ask for a mental competency exam, which generally would take anywhere from two to four months. In determining whether a defendant is competent to stand trial, the court would focus on the ability of the accused to understand the charge and to assist in his or her defense.
Weed acted irrationally and walked down a street firing a gun into the air before being arrested, police have said. Horn asked Tuesday that Weed remain in custody while the case is pending. The defense waived its right to a hearing on the motion. link.
As for the individual to whom your post was addressed, it appears that he somehow talked his way out of the penalty box long enough to make the obnoxious post in #87 -- and then got sent back to the penalty box pronto. Must have set some kind of FR record for shortest time out of the box. Hope he's in for longer this time; JohnD9207 and caitlynsmom have taken more than enough cr*p from this idiot.
Thanks Freepers...it's nice to know that compassionate conservative's exist for my daughter and granddaughter.

I was also asked to ping others to this thread.
So I did, I pinged others here so they could pray for you JohnD9207 and your daughter,caitlynsmom.
Prayer is a wonderful thing and I hope those that come here pray for your family at this terrible time.
Caitlyn is twice blessed. Not only will she feel the love of her father, she will know the love of her mother and grandfather. If only every child could be so lucky.
My prayers are with you and your family. God Bless You this Christmas and always.
God Speed, Peace and Prayers to you and yours.
Mustang sends.
Glad to hear there were circumstances not mentioned in the article which may get the perp a 1st degree conviction. It's just too easy for people locked up on mental grounds to "prove" they've recovered and get out in a relatively short time. This guy clearly needs to be locked up permanently.
Also, just FYI, I'm a "sis", not a "bro".
Best wishes to you and your family during this heartbreaking time.
Safely Home
I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.
Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.
And He came Himself to meet me
In that way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus' arm to lean on
Could I have one doubt or dread?
Then you must not grieve so sorely
For I love you dearly still:
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's Will.
There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth---
You shall rest in Jesus' land.
When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!
Here are some words from the Word that have sustained me: The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace. Psalm 29:11
"I note that Oklahoma is real hard on murderers."
#########################################################
I'd have to say...that ''real hard'' would not be the words I'd use..Maybe the word ''just'' would be appropiate..? As in justice is served....when the state of OK. follows thru on the law.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family John........
May the state of Oklahoma hold a speedy trial, a speedy sentencing, and then prompt execution of justice on this slimeball.
