[history]
It was the night of Jan. 10, and California's energy crisis was heading into meltdown.
Pacific Gas and Electric Co. was going bankrupt, a harried Gov. Gray Davis was told. White House talks aimed at guaranteeing the state enough energy to ease the crisis had broken down. A Stage 3 power alert loomed.

Good for Riordan. He owed it to LA to get the best price for the surplus power on the open market that he could. I expect the same of my town (Santa Clara) since we produce a surplus. If you don't like the situaton, vote out the bastard Dems and Reps that made this artificial "deregulated" market.

This was an excellent hitpiece by the Chronicle, running with a story spoon-fed to it by Gray Davis' staff. By running it in the SF newspaper, it plays off the traditional animosity that exists in the state between those south of Bakersfield and the rest of Northern California.
In order to win an election over Riordan (if he becomes the Republican nominee), Davis will need an especially strong showing in this region, as Riordan could be expected to draw additional support as the candidate of Southern California.
Too bad for Davis and for California that the rest of Davis's political decisions weren't as slick as this bit of free campaign propaganda.

It doesn't surprise me. Considering that he has shunned the Catholic Church in virtually all of his positions, why not adultery as well? (in the Catholic church a remarriage is not valid if there is no anullment of the first marriage because the church considers the first marriage still valid.)
