The only thing Afghanistan and the Taliban regime have gotten from the attack and its aftermath is their own destruction, and more mayhem in their country. This was perfectly foreseeable. So if the Taliban had a role in the attack, what was their motive? Considering the US lack of response to previous terror attacks I do not think it was perfectly foreseeable that we would wage the war we are currently engaged in. The Taliban very well may not have had a role in the attack. They were being controlled by bin Laden and Pakistani terrorists. Their motive in allowing Al-Qeda unhindered access to their country was apparantly money and power.

I agree. The (ok, overused) example of appeasing Hitler seems to be lost on the author. Maybe that's why it gets used so much, none of the peaceniks really believes it happened.
