Do you know of any Veterans that need Holiday Cards?
Posted on 12/08/2001 5:55:19 PM PST by Sungirl
I just had an idea..that may have already been posted but just in case, I want to inquire again. I just read this post on 68-69TonkinGulfYatchClub web page:
I AM HOPING YOU AND YOUR READERS CAN HELP ME WITH A PROBLEM, I HAVE A NEIGHBOR, A MARINE, WHO DID TWO TOURS IN NAM, HE IS VERY POOR HEALTH AND PROBABLY WON'T LIVE TO SEE ANOTHER CHRISTMAS, HE LIVES IN A 3 ROOM HOUSE HE BUILT HIS SELF, HE HAS NO LIVING FAMILY, FEW FRIENDS, EVERY CHRISTMAS I TAKE HIM A BASKET OF GOODIES, WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO ADD TO THAT IS CHRISTMAS CARDS FROM ALL OVER, FROM OTHER VETS, YOU CAN'T IMAGINE HOW HAPPY THIS WOULD MAKE HIS CHRISTMAS. HE LIVES WITH HIS CAT, AND IN ON OXYGEN AS HE HAS EMPHYSEMA AND IS BASICALLY HOUSEBOUND. PLEASE IF YOU CAN HELP ME, HIS NAME IS RICHARD WORKMAN, AND YOU CAN SEND CARDS TO HIM
C/O COLLEEN CASTILLO, 3372 S KNOX, ODESSA,TX 79763
THANKS
--- COLLEEN CASTILLO
AND I thought this was a great idea. I thought that if anyone else knows of a Vet that lives alone, wouldn't it be nice if we sent them cards this Christmas?

Dear Sungal,
For all the teasing I do to you, the least I can do is send him the card.
Love, Laz.
PS: Two hamsters and a giraffe were harmed during the creation of this Freep message.

Yes, Please send one to my sister. She is a Veteran with early on-set Alzheimers. She turned 54 on Nov. 30th. Her name is, and address is: Loretta Osbourne, Missouri Veteran's Home, #1 Veteran's Drive, Mexico, MO 65265
I could not tell you if she would know if she got the cards, but the cards would definitely go around. Bless you big time. Loretta started having seizures after about 5 years in the army. They retired her fairly quickly because of the drugs she had to take. She no longer talks, walks or speaks. My heart has been breaking for so long, thank you. BlueSage

Thank you! I hope those words are enough.

I have copied this address, and a card will be mailed on Monday. Bless our Vets, and you too. It is hard to see what these folks go through for our country. They deserve the most respect. Thank you. BSW.

Hopefully, there are enough vets around to give him a rousing Free Republic Christmas. You could organize a Christmas Vet Freep with cards, goodies, a flag, a Marine Banner and a great big
"Semper Fi" sign.

These are some to try...
If you live near a base call and ask if they know of a vet alone and needing a card and Christmas cheer
Go to any Veterans group in your area and ask there too, they would know also of Vets living alone or needing cheering up
VA hospitals always have vets that sure could use cards, reading to , little Christmas trees already decorated.
I hope this helps.
Thanks austinTparty for the ping.

Another Viet Nam Vet at the Mexico Missouri Veteran's home could use some mail. Like Loretta, he has early on-set Alzheimer's. He is also only 54 years of age. He still walks and talks, but is fading quickly. He was in active combat and later became the Director of Emergency Medicine at a local hospital. He now resides at the Veteran's Home, Michael Blackburn MD, #1 Veteran's Drive, Mexico MO 65265. His wife a child are heartbroken. He may realize he has received mail this year. Next year may be too late.
