Israel condemned by 114 countries

MORE than 100 signatories of the Geneva Convention gathered in Switzerland yesterday to reprimand Israel for "indiscriminate and disproportionate violence" against Palestinian civilians in the occupied territories.

The 114 states - including Britain and the rest of the European Union - issued a joint declaration urging Israel to abide by international laws enshrined in the 1949 accord seeking to protect civilians in wartime or under military occupation.

It was the first such declaration by signatory states since the Convention was signed in 1949, as a similar session was adjourned after 17 minutes in July 1999. Israel and its close allies, the United States and Australia - which are also signatories of the Convention - boycotted the session.

The declaration expressed deep concern about a "deterioration of the humanitarian situation" in Palestinian areas, condemned Jewish settlements there as "illegal" and urged Israel to refrain from "grave breaches" such as "unlawful deportation", "wilful killing" and "tor- ture".

Yaakov Levy, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, criticised the declaration as "one-sided".

He said it contained "unsubstantiated allegations" and should have condemned acts of terrorism against Israel.

After Hamas's recent actions, very few Americans are going to be critical of Israel in the near future, in view of our own 9/11 experience. I have myself been very critical of Israel in the past, as anyone checking USS Liberty threads can verify. But Israel is turning out to be on the same side in this war as we are, and I am not going to criticize Israel for defending herself. I suspect the same is true of virtually all Americans.

So, it really doesn't matter very much what 114 countries may say, as long as U.S. support for Israel has been solidified.

What a distorted sense of justice. The Bible predicts that the world would turn against Israel..and they hate God's people for the same reason they hate God.
I feel extremely blessed and priviledged to live in the nation which is the greatest supporter of Israel in the modern world.

I realize that it will just keep on happening due to the makeup of the countries involved, but I am so unbelievably sick of this incredible bias in condemning Israel for responding to terrorism but NEVER EVER NOT ONE SINGLE TIME ever condemning the Palestinians for commiting the terrorism in the first place.

Do you think that the Palestinians should be "condemned" in kind for the terrorist acts they committed?

I agree with Milosevic...international bodies are useless organs that produce puffed up words. Let them "condemn" whatever they want--the world will continue to turn.

not so much a meaningless statement when viewed in the light of this:

Zechariah 14:1-9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

This whole deal was an ARAB-ENGINEERED thing. Brit FM Jack Straw slammed it. Australia, USA, Israel, others boycotted.

Just Arab mischief on the march.

How many countries are there these days?

About all a vote like this suggests to me is that the world is full of evil and/or hypocritical politicians, who all seem to know which side their bread is oiled on.

Was it the roof top snipers with silencers killing 8 & 9 yr olds? Or was it the booby traps killing 7 yr olds?

Lies.
